El chamán
Portraitures and city landscapes have
interested Quijano since her initial creative studies in
Colombia.
The focus on the history, art, religion and the myths of the first inhabitants
of Colombia and South America have been the primary force behind Quijano's
exploration into the forms and language of abstract painting. Quijano's exile
from the country of her birth, Sogamoso-Boyaca, Colombia, has given rise to a
study in canvas of these primal expressions left behind by the inhabitants who
first confronted South America's wonderous and incomparable natural
environment.
The subjects of her abstract paintings are Andean, petroglyphs, and above all the Shaman. In the different indigenous cultures of the Shaman is the chief player of many roles. He is priest, magician, father, troubador, judge, all these roles with a seemingly common purpose: To interpret and communicate natural phenomena. This adaptive nature of the Shaman lends itself very well to abstract painting, a world which turns on itself in changing colors and the revolving fantasy of the viewer.
